Review: Optimum Nutrition’s Platinum Hydrobuilder™

It’s easy to get confused with all the new research on whey, casein and egg protein. All three have their benefits, so most bodybuilders have three separate containers for each protein— but now there is Optimum Nutrition’s (ON) Platinum Hydrobuilder™ to simplify your life when choosing protein supplements for muscle gain.

Optimum Nutrition’s Platinum Hydrobuilder™ is one of the rare top protein powders built on a foundation of staged-delivery proteins— from fast Hydrolyzed Whey Protein Isolates and Hydrolyzed Egg Albumen to slower Micellar Casein. The researchers have also included BetaPower™ natural betaine to promote performance and endurance, plus micronized Creapure® creatine to support muscle size and training capacity. With over 13.5 grams of Essential Amino Acids per serving and just 180 calories, Optimum Nutrition’s Platinum Hydrobuilder™ is the complete workout recovery drink and one of the best bodybuilding supplements that work.

ON’s Platinum Hydrobuilder™ Highlights:

  • Patent-pending CreaPep™ peptides for enhanced nutrient delivery.
  • Fast-acting hydrolyzed proteins: HYDROWHEY® and HYDROEGG™— slow-digesting Micellar Casein protein.
  • Over 13.5 grams of essential amino acids (EAAs) for recovery and rebuilding.
  • Nearly 9 grams of leucine, isoleucine and valine (BCAAs).
  • 5 grams of micronized Creapure® creatine to help support increases in lean body mass.
  • 2.5 grams of BetaPower™ natural betaine to help improve strength, energy and power.
  • Comprehensive enzyme complex to help support digestion.
  • Patent-pending CreaPep™ peptides for enhanced nutrient delivery.
  • Micronized BCAAs, glutamine, arginine and citrulline.
  • P180 calories per serving (depending on flavor).

Combination Proteins Are Better Than Single Proteins

Milk proteins (~20 percent whey and ~80 percent casein) are superior sources of post-workout protein, compared to lower-quality proteins such as soy. Whey has been characterized as a “fast” protein and casein as a “slow” protein due to their digestion and absorption rates. Interestingly, casein was previously demonstrated to have the best effects on maintaining long-term protein kinetics, as whey is a relatively fast protein in terms of digestion and absorption. The insulin responses to whey protein are much higher than that of casein, which may contribute to the enhanced anabolic response.

What does the research tell us about whey versus casein? A combination protein like whey and casein seems to be the optimal protein combo after training— as whey stimulates protein synthesis early, whereas casein stimulates a longer and more sustained increase in protein synthesis. A product like Optimum Nutrition’s Platinum Hydrobuilder™ has a blend of both whey and casein for optimal anabolic needs after training.

Creapure®: Not all Creatine Is the Same

When looking at the top bodybuilding supplements, it has been found that creatine has a synergistic effect with whey protein to increase muscle hypertrophy. Previous research found that the combination of creatine and whey protein produced superior effects compared to each one used separately. Optimum Nutrition’s Platinum Hydrobuilder™ contains 5 grams of Creapure®, not ordinary creatine. Creapure® is the purest brand of creatine you can buy— bottom line. A recent study took samples of several name-brand creatine products and found that many of the creatine products on the market contained impurities. Creapure® is guaranteed to be the highest in quality, purity and safety. When the HPLC (High Pressure Liquid Chromatography or High Performance Liquid Chromatography) analysis is done on it, no impurities are detected.

Enzyme Complex for Digestion

Some bodybuilders have commented that they feel “bloated” or “gassy” after taking protein supplements because of incomplete absorption. Optimum Nutrition’s Platinum Hydrobuilder™ combines digestive enzymes to help promote maximum bioavailability of nutrients for protein digestion in the body. This unique combination of digestive enzymes optimizes the breakdown of protein for proper nutrient absorption and digestion.
