Thyroid Hormones Control Brown Fat

Today's Fat Tip : Thyroid

The human body contains small amounts of a calorie-burning tissue called brown fat (brown adipose tissue, BAT) that converts food energy directly into heat. White adipose tissue does the opposite— it stores energy as fat. Individual differences in BAT content and activity play important roles in human obesity. Activating the genes that control BAT production and activity might help treat obesity. Swedish researchers speculated that thyroid hormones influence the brain to increase brown fat activity and promote caloric expenditure. This is an important mechanism for maintaining the weight set point— the body’s long-term bodyweight target. The clinical significance of these findings is not known, but they help us understand the complicated process of metabolic control. (Nature Medicine, 16: 965-967, 2010)
