Today's Fat Tip : The Friends Effect

Obesity might be contagious. Researchers from Harvard and MIT found that people who had fat friends increased their risk of obesity by 50 percent. Your risk of obesity increases by 0.5 percent per year for each of your friends that is obese. Based on their theory, 42 percent of Americans will be obese within the next 40 years. The reverse isn’t true: associating with skinny people will not help you lose weight. The results were based on studying social associations in the Framingham Study, a large scientific experiment that began in the 1940s. (PLoS One, published online November 4, 2010)
